Did you know there is a difference between a prenatal dietitian & general dietitian?

A prenatal dietitian is a general dietitian who has chosen to specialise and understand a niche area such as prenatal nutrition to effectively support mothers throughout pregnancy with the following factors and with the most recent and up to date evidence and experience:

  • Prevent and or manage pregnancy side effects at an individual level

  • Calculate personal dietary requirements to optimise healthy weight changes

  • Provide personally tailored advice on nutritional supplements to ensure appropriate micronutrients are met to optimise genetic programming

  • Offer nutritional guidance to prevent and or manage pregnancy complications: gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia

  • Support mothers with dietary changes to optimise the baby’s future health outcomes, such as immunity and learning abilities through genetic programming

  • Reduce confusion and to de-bunk common pregnancy food and nutrition myths

A prenatal dietitian has detailed knowledge regarding pregnancy nutrition needs, therefore provision of service is guaranteed to be up to date, highly knowledgeable and personalised. We have a comprehensive understanding of a mothers pregnancy journey and especially since I am currently experiencing my own journey now, I ensure my recommendations are relatable and practical!

Its no surprise that more than 75% of pregnant women are attaining nutrition information from the internet…

Since information (especially nutrition) is so diverse online, research has found that mothers become too overwhelmed and confused and end up giving up or eating “what they like” which may or may not benefit them and their offspring. Often online social media bloggers can promote “unrealistic expectations” for mothers to meet regarding their food intake and weight changes.

Everyone is unique, therefore no one should be recommending the same dietary guide or weight guide for all mothers. Sometimes it can be hard to access a prenatal dietitian and since the internet is the most common source for mothers to find convenient information on pregnancy advice around nutrition, it makes sense for dietitian’s like myself specialising in the area to become more available and approachable for women who are searching for answers and the right answers for them and their lifestyle!
